Hello! My name is Laura
I have lived and worked in Birmingham since August 2016, and have a position as a Research Fellow in Maternity at the University of Birmingham. Before then, I completed a research project on water birth in Oxford, and had previously spent 9 years in Cardiff where I completed my PhD in Nursing and Midwifery (2012-2016).
During my time in Oxford I attended a number of births at a beautiful Freestanding Midwifery-Led Unit. Although I didn’t know it at the time, this was my first step towards becoming a Doula. I absolutely loved supporting women during this time, and always felt honoured that women and their partners wanted to include me in such an amazing experience.
After moving to Birmingham and working full-time in my research job, I started to miss the “real-life” side to maternity – actually supporting pregnant women, and getting the evidence out to where it should be. I began to look into the role of Doulas, and was amazed to find such high-quality evidence which showed the positive impact of these birth partners in terms of reduced rates of c-section, reduced rates of epidurals and 100% satisfaction from women. Immediately I knew that this was something I wanted to do.
I grew up in the countryside (near Dartmoor) and have a massive family who are all still based in the Devon area. I love the outdoors and camping, and have travelled widely.
I absolutely love what I do, and would be honoured to support you in your journey.
